Global delivery, local sovereignty
Hosting your study data where it belongs
For research teams running multi-site trials, two things matter: your platform must work anywhere, and your data must live where it should. Spiral offers both — with hosting options in Stockholm, London, Sydney, and Auckland — so your trial can meet local requirements while performing globally.
Why this matters
Data residency isn’t a checkbox; it’s at the core of ethics, regulation, and community trust. In Aotearoa New Zealand, Māori data sovereignty affirms the rights of Māori to data about Māori and is increasingly shaping how health data is governed and protected. Hosting data locally supports those expectations and helps align study governance with tikanga and kaupapa Māori.
Data residency is a global challenge, and Spiral is facing it with thoughtful solutions.
At Spiral, we see New Zealand as a powerful training ground for solving these challenges well. The standards we apply in Aotearoa translate directly to our work in Australia, the UK, the EU, and beyond.
What makes Aotearoa a proving ground
Clear expectations: Māori data governance highlights consent, control, and benefit for communities involved in research.
Practical outcomes: Hosting data locally supports these expectations and aligns study governance with tikanga and kaupapa Māori.
Transferable principles: The same foundations—sovereignty, transparency, and accountability—help address residency and stewardship questions in other jurisdictions and cultures.
What Spiral offers today
Place your study close to your sites. Choose hosting in Auckland, Sydney, London, or Stockholm to meet data-residency needs (eg, Aotearoa, Australia, UK, EU) and to minimise latency for clinicians.
Architected for resilience. For each of our AWS regions, we design for multi-availability zones, high availability and disaster recovery aligned to your study’s risk profile.
Security baked in. Encryption in transit and at rest, role-based access, audit trails, and environment isolation are standard parts of our builds. (AWS underpins this with a broad set of globally recognised security certifications.)
Governance that respects sovereignty. We work with research teams to align data location, access, and retention with data sovereignty principles and your protocol.
Choosing a hosting location — quick guide
Australia (Sydney): Australian-led trials or ANZ consortia prioritising low latency for AU sites.
United Kingdom (London): UK-only studies or where UK GDPR residency is preferred.
European Union (Stockholm): EU-led programmes or studies needing an EU data controller/processor footprint.
Aotearoa (Auckland): Māori data, New Zealand government or DHB studies, or ethics conditions that require in-country storage.
If your study spans regions, we can isolate data by geography while keeping the user experience seamless for your team of investigators and research nurses.
For indigenous-led and indigenous-involved studies
We support governance models that reflect Indigenous data sovereignty, including clear kaitiaki roles, access controls, and reporting that respects collective rights in data.
Next step: tell us where your trial data needs to live, and we’ll propose an architecture that keeps it there — without sacrificing performance for your sites elsewhere.-
