Quality & Automation Engineer — Fully Remote, NZ-Based

Help ensure the reliability of software that supports critical medical research.

Why this role matters

This is not just another engineering role.

At Spiral, the software we build supports clinical trials and research studies that help improve health outcomes around the world. Our platform helps researchers collect and manage complex medical data safely, reliably, and efficiently.

As our Quality & Automation Engineer, you’ll play a key role in strengthening the testing, reliability, and automation practices behind that platform — helping ensure researchers can trust the tools they rely on.

You’ll join a small, highly experienced remote team who value thoughtful engineering, practical solutions, and working together respectfully.

What you'll do

This role sits within our Technical Support Team and works closely with Developers, Product Owners, and our Security team.

You’ll help modernise and scale our testing and quality practices while supporting the reliability of our platform.

Your work will include:

Quality & Automation

  • Designing and developing automated test suites across our platform
  • Identifying opportunities to reduce manual testing through automation
  • Supporting regression, integration, functional and API testing
  • Embedding testing earlier in the development lifecycle
  • Improving QA processes, templates, and testing documentation

Engineering & Platform Quality

  • Participating in code reviews and improving engineering standards
  • Supporting teams in debugging and resolving technical issues
  • Helping identify technical debt and quality improvements

Integrations & Platform Reliability

  • Supporting integration work with external systems and APIs
  • Assisting with diagnosing and resolving integration issues
  • Helping maintain reliable data flows and secure API practices

Infrastructure & DevOps Support

  • Assisting with monitoring and performance optimisation of cloud-hosted services
  • Supporting incident response and root cause analysis
  • Contributing to infrastructure automation where appropriate

Technical Documentation

  • Documenting testing frameworks, automation processes and integration workflows
  • Maintaining clear technical documentation within our internal systems

About you:

  • You’re someone who cares about software quality, reliability, and good engineering practices.
  • You enjoy solving problems, improving systems, and helping teams ship better software.
  • You might describe yourself as:
    • Curious, analytical and detail-focused
    • A thoughtful problem-solver who enjoys improving systems
    • Comfortable working independently in a remote team
    • A clear communicator who collaborates well with both technical and non-technical colleagues

Skills & Experience

We’re open to different backgrounds, but experience in some of the following will help you succeed:

  • Experience with automated testing or QA engineering
  • Familiarity with modern testing frameworks and test automation tools
  • Understanding of APIs and integration testing
  • Experience working with cloud environments (AWS or similar)
  • Exposure to CI/CD pipelines, DevOps practices, or infrastructure automation
  • Experience working in Agile teams
  • Experience with .NET applications, test automation frameworks, or API testing tools would be a bonus.
