Oxford Insights

The Bodleian Library is the main research library of the University of Oxford. It's one of the oldest libraries in Europe and is stacked with books dating back 600 years. As I walked the halls of the Bodleian last month, I reflected on three things:

1) I feel inspired by humanity and the knowledge we have retained over the years.

2) Each piece of information learnt and shared contributes to the life we build for our children and grandchildren. We really do stand on the shoulders of our tupuna (ancestors).

3) Our collaboration with Oxford University on the Panoramic trial really is something unique.

This first-of-its-kind clinical trial is an adaptive platform trial. It provides randomisation during the course of the study so that multiple treatments for the same disease can be tested simultaneously. This approach ensures the study is safe and provides humanised, life-saving results.

I felt grateful for Aotearoa, New Zealand. Despite the high vaccination uptake in the United Kingdom, COVID-19 remains a prevalent part of life. People continue to require critical care, and sadly, morbidity remains a very real risk. Our work together is urgent and ever-evolving.

The platform used every day by our global trial partners was designed and coded by the Spiral team. This approach ensures we have complete control over how it is configured. This is particularly valuable when you have a trial that uses novel design methodologies, such as Panoramic.

Our software helps identify treatments for COVID-19 for use in the community in the early stages of the illness. This speeds up recovery and prevents the need for hospital admissions. Supporting the Panoramic team gives us the unique opportunity to help them in their search for antiviral treatments that will be effective early on in the disease. Our mahi (work) together saves lives!

I was there to connect with the wonderful team behind the study. Because while we meet weekly online, it’s only natural to want to meet in person.

I was there to hear about the small things that their researchers wish our platform could do. The small but fundamental ideas that enhance and improve our product.

I was there to gift the team with New Zealand’s finest UMF manuka honey to help them stay well as the winter months approach in the Northern Hemisphere. Because people matter most to me.

We have deep experience with the many types of adaptive randomisation and novel trial designs. Our collaboration here is only a further testament to that.
