It’s a term borrowed from newspaper printing. Because of the physical dimensions of a newspaper it is “folded” when you see it on the stand. The big stories are placed at the top of the front page and a reader needs to flip the paper over or unfold it to read the other stories. In web design “the fold” means the line below which the website visitor must scroll to see more of the page content on their monitor. This “fold” alters depending on the website visitor’s monitor or window size.
